As the British American colonies became more sound & furniture became more plentiful in the 18th century, colonists often moved hackneyed daily chores outdoors as soon as the suffer allowed. Preparing vegetables & fruits; churning butter; washing, spinning & sewing; studying schoolwork; and practicing tuneful instruments all became outdoor activities during the hot, humid summers along the shores of the Atlantic . Traditionally the formal gardens of the British landed gentry, living in servant-laden households, had served as gratification grounds for promenading, meditating, romancing, or diverting.
By mid-century the up-to-date colonial gardener knew that the latest drop dictated placing seats & benches to accentuate a focal point in the garden, to terminate an impressive vista on the oddity, or to catch a cooling breeze under trees or by the weaken. As early as 1669, English garden writer John Worlidge had instructed his readers in Systema Agriculturae that good garden seats should be placed "at the ends of your walks...that whilst you sit in them you will have the sentiment of your garden." In his 1718 garden writings, Stephen Switzer, Iconographia Rustica or the Nobleman, Gentleman and Gardeners' Games makes a direct reference to the Windsor chairwoman. By 1730 a London newspaper advertisement offered for sales marathon "All sorts of Windsor Garden Chairs." Like their less wealthy neighbors, colonial strata usually carted common chairs outside, whenever the rise above permitted. Gardens & yards served as accepted extensions of cramped indoor living...
